Healthy Weight Week
January 18 - 24, 2009 |
|
During Healthy Weight Week, Allegan Occupational Health is striving to create a healthier work environment for our staff.
We plan to bring in healthy snacks for the office, such as: carrots, celery and peanut butter, cucumbers, apples, oranges, almonds, deviled eggs, dill pickles, cheeses, pretzels, sugar free pudding and jello.
We also plan to have a 15-minute line dancing break each day over lunch to get us up and moving.
Healthy Weight Week is a time for people of all sizes to live actively, eat well and feel good about themselves and others. We hope you will join us in this endeavor. If you do, send us an e-mail and let us know what your business did to become healthier.

Eye Protection in the Workplace |
Every day an estimated 1,000 eye injuries occur in American workplaces. The financial cost of these injuries is enormous - more than $300 million per year in lost production time, medical expenses,
and worker compensation.
What Contributes to Eye Injuries at Work?
Not wearing eye protection. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that
nearly three out of every five workers injured were not wearing eye
protection at the time of the accident. In the workplace, eye injuries
often require one or more missed work days to recover from and may
cause temporary or permanent vision loss.
The most important thing you can do to protect your vision on the job is
to always wear appropriate protective eyewear, which can prevent more
than 90 percent of serious eye injuries.
Protecting Your Eyes
There are two thing you can do to help prevent an eye injury:
1. Eliminate hazards before starting work. Use machine guarding, work screens or other engineering controls.
2. Use proper eye protection.
The type of safety eye protection needed depends on the hazards in your workplace and should be compliant with OSHA regulations for eye and face protection. If you are working in an area that has particles, flying objects or dust, you must at least wear safety glasses with side
protection (side shields). If you are working with chemicals, you should
wear goggles. If you are working near hazardous radiation (welding,
lasers or fiber optics), you must use special-purpose safety glasses,
goggles, face shields or helmets designed for that task.
