Preventing Falls at Home
Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults. Nonfatal falls sent 1.8 million older adults to the emergency room, according to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“The good news is that falls are not a normal part of the aging process,” said Brenda Nausieda, Allegan Homecare manager. “Almost 60 percent of falls occur at home and can be prevented.”

Hazards around the home are the most common cause of falls. Nausieda suggestions playing it safe with these steps:

    • Keep floors and walkways free of clutter.

    • Ensure that all stairwells are adequately lit. Install handrails on both sides. Place fluorescent tape on the edges of the top and bottom steps for visibility, and nonslip treads on wood steps.

    • Install grab bars beside tubs, showers, and toilets.

    • Use a rubber bath mat or place nonskid adhesive strips in the shower or tub.

    • Make sure you have adequate lighting throughout your home.

    • Eliminate throw rugs. Secure loose area rugs with double-faced tape or slip-resistant backing.

    • Put things you use often on shelves that are easy to reach.

Practicing healthy habits can also lessen your risk for falls. Examples include:

    • Stay active. Weight-bearing exercises, such as walking and climbing stairs, can help make you stronger—and less likely to fall. And other exercises, such as tai chi, have been shown to improve balance.

    • Get your eyesight checked yearly.

    • Talk to your doctor about the side effects of all medicines you're taking. Some can affect your balance.

    • Stand up slowly after sitting or lying down.

    • Wear sturdy, rubber-soled shoes around the house instead of house slippers.
