| Allegan will join an estimated 1,000 local communities to celebrate the 17th Annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day (NSHFD) on Wednesday, May 26, 2010. National Senior Health & Fitness Day is being sponsored locally by Allegan General Hospital and Curves of Allegan. It will be held from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Allegan High School’s Performing Arts Center.
On this day an estimated 100,000 senior citizens across the country are expected to help promote active, healthy lifestyles through physical fitness, good nutrition and preventive care. According to Penny Brown, AGH’s Marking & Public Relations Manager, “This free event is a wonderful opportunity for seniors to make, renew, and revitalize their commitment to live healthier lives through better health and fitness. They will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities including health screenings, workshops and exercise demonstrations.”
This event is geared for seniors of all fitness levels. Exercise demonstrations will include tai chi, line dancing and arm chair exercise. Weather permitting there will be a fitness walk on the high school’s track. Other activities scheduled include Wii Bowling, health information booths and a tour of the high school pool. Free health screenings will include blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, body mass index and lung capacity.
Individuals will also have an opportunity to participate in a “Medicine Brown Bag.” “This is where seniors bring there prescriptions along and a pharmacist will look at their medications for any possible interactions,” explained Leslie Waligora, owner of Curves of Allegan.
