AGH Launches Pelvic Wellness Center
With the growing number of women impacted by pelvic health conditions each year, Allegan General Hospital partnering with Allegan Professional Health Services has launched a new Pelvic Wellness Center that will offer a unique centralized approach to care and one-to-one patient education.
“The goal of the center is to help women of all ages in our community identify and seek help for pelvic health conditions often causing them daily pain, discomfort, inconvenience and embarrassment,” said Jennifer Dentler, NP-C, Allegan Pelvic Wellness Center Coordinator. “We are bringing together a range of medical experts from different disciplines and offering individualized attention to help women in our community improve and recover.”
Childbirth, menopause, repeated heavy lifting, constipation and hysterectomy are common causes of pelvic health conditions, which include incontinence, urinary frequency, vaginal dryness, pelvic pain and pelvic organ prolapse. The National Women's Health Resource Center (NWHRC) estimates that at least one-third of all women (about 35 million) will be treated for a pelvic health condition by the age of 60 – and even more women silently suffer without diagnoses, according to their latest report which was released in 2007.
“Many women believe pelvic and bladder issues are a normal consequence of aging and don’t seek help,” said Dentler. “These issues are not a normal part of aging. Studies have shown with proper diagnosis and treatment, over 90% of women can improve their symptoms.”
Every patient of the Allegan Pelvic Wellness Center will be evaluated by a nurse practitioner, who will work to develop a personalized treatment plan. Treatment options may include lifestyle modifications, nutrition counseling, physical therapy and biofeedback.
