Sleep Center Receives Program Accreditation

Allegan General Hospital’s Sleep Center recently received program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).

“The American Academy of Sleep Medicine congratulates Allegan General Hospital’s Sleep Center on meeting the high standards required for receiving accreditation as a sleep disorders center,” said Dr. Nathaniel Watson, AASM president.

"I am so proud Allegan General Hospital can offer the services of an accredited Sleep Center to our patients,” said Dr. Patricia Seiler, board certified sleep medicine specialist and Medical Director of Allegan General Hospital’s Sleep Center. “Untreated sleep problems can harm physical health, increase accident risks, and interfere with good mental health, having an accredited Sleep Center in Allegan makes getting the best sleep health care easier."

To receive accreditation for a five-year period, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards as designated by the AASM. These standards address core areas such as patient care, quality assurance, facility and equipment, policies and procedures, and staffing. Additionally, the sleep center’s goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine accredited a sleep disorders center for the first time in 1977. Today there are more than 2,500 AASM-accredited sleep centers across the country.
